13 minutes travel time from Taipei to Yilan on proposed Taiwan High-Speed Railway extension

Taipei (Taiwan News), according to the initial plan by the Railway Bureau, if a proposed extension from Taipei become reality it will take only 13 minutes to travel the 50-kilometer route from Nangang Taipei to the eastern city of Yilan by Taiwan High-Speed Rail (HSR).

As reported by UDN last October 23, the concept is still evaluated by the authorities for more than ten years, a direct railway route from Taipei through the Central Mountain Range to Yilan. Also, a Minister of Transportation and Communications Lin Chia-lung directed related officials to include the HSR extensions in an assessment process.

Base on the initial assessment report, it needs more amount of money or funds to build the project. The construction of the direct railway route to Toucheng would cost NT$66.8 billion, and the HSR extension through Toucheng to Yilan a cost of NT$95.5 billion, as reported by UDN.

It will save more time if the plan has become a reality. You can travel for only 13 minutes to reach Yilan City from Nangang by HSR extension, while at TRA's Puyuma Express takes an hour. It is double the amount of time.

The Taipei Yilan direct railway would be able to carry about 18,000 passengers per hour. The HSR extension carrying 14,400 to 18,000 passengers per hour.

The construction cost and traveling time are still evaluated. Railway Bureau Deputy Director-General Yang Cheng-Chun said that the initial report will be submitted to the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC).
