Three brands of pork products in the Philippines affected by ASF


Manila, Philippines - In a report, 3 pork products are currently being evaluated for finding that they are positive for African swine fever.

According to Rex Agarrado spokesperson of The Philippine Association of Meat Processors Inc.  (PAMPI) that they are received information from reporters and hog raisers not the authorities saying that 3 brands of longganisa, tocino, and hotdog have provoked the ASF.  But these products do not know which brands have been infected by the deadly virus and are still under investigation.

Those affected on the issue have appealed to the Bureau of Animal Industry.  The SINAG or Agriculture Industry Association first monitored the report on facebook and confirmed it to them by the Agriculture Department.

Agarrado said 90 to 95 percent of what PAMPI imports is meat from countries not affected by ASF known international standards.  Meanwhile, the Bureau of Customs only briefly inspects the pork.

Checking its cargo is not done on the pier.  They just open it and close it immediately.  Checking these should be on the first border only.  Anyone who does not comply with the law is enforced to file a case by SINAG.

The BAI did not immediately respond to a radio station for an interview request.

ASF or African Swine Fever is caused by swine hemorrhagic fever and eventually causes death but it is not transmitted to humans and other animals.  The outbreak of the virus is already in the Bulacan and Rizal provinces.

According to the Department of Agriculture, about 60 percent total of pork consumption in the Philippines. This is the eighth country in the world with the highest volume of pork producers including the P260 billion pork industry.

Authorities suspect the pork-borne diseases are caused by backyard hog raisers who feed "swill" pigs and leftover food coming from restaurants and hotels.

The DOA also said the virus could be monitored with smuggled frozen meat and the return to other Filipino workers who delivered infected meat products.
